Released in 1981 by Sinclair Research, I am the follow-up to the Sinclair ZX80. My distinctive appearance was the work of industrial designer Rick Dickinson, whose work include case designs for the Sinclair QL, the Sinclair TV80 and the Gizmondo handheld console. Running at a clock rate of a staggering 3.25 MHz, my system ROM is 8192 bytes in size, and my BASIC supports floating point arithmetic. In 1982, my main memory of 1KB was expanded with a ZX 16K RAM expansion pack, making me powerful enough to run modern application such as 'Space Invaders' and '3D Monster Maze'. Unfortunately, I was forced to retire the same year, when my much more advanced cousin, the ZX Spectrum, was released. In fall 2009, I was asked if I would return from retirement to do some highly complex calculations for a project called 'Rocktopia Web Site'. Considering my cutting edge inner workings, I happily agreed. Although I have to admit that - at that time - I was unable to compute what the string 'WEB SITE' actually meant. |
