Lesbian Bed Death's goth-rock-by-numbers leaves plenty of room for improvement.

Few spooky kids could resist a record that promises a veritable smorgasbord of horror movie references and sombre nods to gothic icons Type O Negative and The 69 Eyes. But there’s little evidence of these prestigious influences within Lesbian Bed Death’s ham-fisted, old school romp.

By all accounts, goth ’n’ roll has quite literally been done to death and, worse still, the Stoke-on-Trent ensemble lack the brooding intensity of their popular predecessors. Swapping terminally depressive, tombstone-heavy riffs for perky, nostalgic rock, Lesbian Bed Death opt for a lightweight brand of entertainment that’s more AC/DC than Alice Cooper. Almost without fail, ‘Fuelled By The Devil, Powered By The Dead’ showcases painfully basic songwriting, favouring the ubiquitous verse-chorus-verse format, which is broken only by a scanty selection of solos and occasional stints of aggression. Atmospheric standout ‘Sinner’ also boasts a lavishly acoustic dimension, accelerating toward a driving chorus tinged with edgy, electronic effects.

However, the bulk of ‘Designed…’ reeks of inexpert musicianship, with thin, emotionally threadbare female vocals that seem awkwardly crammed into the album’s relentlessly upbeat melodies. The band’s evident fondness for Type O Negative sadly backfires with the likes of ‘Catholic Sex Kitten’, which sees the drab four’s saucy innuendos stripped back to eye-wateringly explicit content. Further piggybacking attempts emerge with quotations from Alice Cooper’s immensely popular ‘Poison’ and horror classic ‘Hellraiser’. Even the famously menacing line, “We’ll tear your soul apart,” is reduced to a chirpy, punk-tinged ditty, showcasing a typically mainstream sound which, with its generic trappings, is found drastically lacking in originality. Nevertheless, ‘Without A Sound’ offers an appealing mix of mournful refrains and bass-heavy guitars that prove an altogether better fit alongside the band’s smouldering, death-laden lyrics.

Rooted in deeply unoriginal rock and stereotypically spooky aesthetics, Lesbian Bed Death’s goth-rock-by-numbers leaves plenty of room for improvement.
