A set of solid, well-performed Rock and Blues tracks.

Mockery and parody are now part of contemporary music – however, this time it's neither about the hilarious music videos of 'Weird' Al Yankovic nor the Hair Metal jesters Steel Panther. This time, it's all about... beards, as the Aussie Comedy Rock band The Beards have just released their fourth effort 'The Beard Album'; again, a set of side-splitting songs about growing and maintaining one's facial hair.

The first track 'Beards Are Back' starts out subtle to develop into a monumental, powerful track that could easily make you shed a tear... if only its lyrics wouldn't make you chuckle all along the way! 'Damn That's A Nice Beard' is a Country-ish mid-tempo affair with a certain live vibe to it – you could almost imagine for yourself, this song being performed in the bar filled with smoke... and ZZ Top lookalikes. 'I Like Beards' continues in a similar manner, with its groovy, Bluesy riffs and Boogie piano. 'There's A Bearded Man Inside Me' is a fine piece of dramatized, synth-laden Rock with splendid vocal harmonies – in the vein of mid-1980s Meat Loaf (that is, if only he was to sing about... guess what). 'All The Bearded Ladies' is catchy Melodic Hard Rock, the dynamic guitars again heavily backed with synthesizer, 'The Bearded Pledge' is a little bit more raw whilst 'Stroking My Beard', which is a neat Pop Rock piece, comments upon the lyrical ego's idleness and the lack of their personal hygiene (remember, you delve into those lyrics on your own responsibility – not that I didn't warn you!).

A groovy Disco track with high-pitched vocals – 'Touch Me In The Beard' – precedes a slow Blues piece 'I Have A Beard And It Looks Really Good'. A groovy, Americana-infused track 'A Bit Of My Beard' is then followed by a heavy, feisty Rocker 'Hey You, Grow A Beard' and a final "secret track", a compilation of supposed "outtakes" in various musical styles...all about beards, of course!

Apart from its impact on the poor reviewer (rolling on the floor with laughter), music-wise 'The Beard Album' is a set of solid, well-performed Rock and Blues tracks – the men behind their beards are undoubtedly versatile and talented musicians. It's a sure fact the album will make you plan on growing your beard soon and write a romantic ode to your three-day stubble – even if you're a lady!
