There's plenty to get your head-banging here.

The word chopper can have many meanings; it can be a name for a helicopter; if you're talking plural then it may be teeth; it can also be an axe or a big ol' penis. While it contains many references to the phallic meaning – crotch-thrusting runs riot here – going by the cover art (which looks tremendously similar to Battleaxe's re-issued 'Burn This Town') this chopper in question is of the two-wheeled, fuel-gulping kind.

Italian Heavy Metal crew Hell's Chopper combine the straight-forward Heavy Punk of Motorhead mixed with the European Speed Metal of Accept. Furious guitar riffs and the odd squealing pinched harmonic run rampant across their debut album 'First Ride'.

Sometimes they get it right on the money: the guitar riffs of 'In Your Faces' and 'Rock Out (Fool)' are ludicrously good – all fire, flame and head-banging glee. 'Ride On You!' is a hell for leather, driving/riding anthem while the Thrash grenade of opener 'Mental Blindness' is scorchingly good fun.

Other times they land comically wide of the mark. 'A-Train' is a ridiculous mess of forced aggression and ludicrous lyrics while 'Feel The Fire' sounds like a teenage school band writing their first song. But 'Kingdome's Free' is a reeking slab of stilton.

Key to this swinging pendulum between genius and god-awful is front-man Paolo "Paulie" De Leonardis who sounds like a mix of an angry Metalhead and a mad performer; powerfully eccentric in almost all the right ways.

But the thing to admire of Hell's Chopper, above all else, is their love of the "Classic Era" Metal bands and their sheer bloody-mindedness of wanting to Rock out. You don't like it? Tough, you're not to ride on this hog. Strap yourself in because for better or worse, there's plenty to get your head-banging here.
