An album worth checking out.

All But Impossible or ABI is a young band formed in 2005. The band, based in New York State in the US, comprises Justin Volpe on vocals, Cody Ryan on guitars, A.J. Piszcz on bass and drummer Jon Scott. For a four piece they have a powerful sound with a distinctive progressive metal approach; their cache is that they are a heavy band but their music has got a commercial and mainstream feel to it in places. As a vocalist, Volpe has the strength and range to make this music style work and the band cope well with the immense range of styles and tempos employed.

A full-on approach to the album is followed from the outset with ‘Freedom Ahead’ shaking out the cobwebs leading to ‘Picture In Your Mind’ with interesting tempo changes and full on drum work with beautifully toned guitar work stitching the song together.

Chris Clancey (Mutiny Within) mixed and mastered the album and has interlaced a number of musical instruments and styles to the core hard progressive rock roots of the band. As a result, ‘Freedom Ahead’, although using acoustic guitar and a folk style, still sounds relevant in the album. This interplay of musical styles keeps things interesting and away from an album solely played at a frenetic pace in a single style.

To make sure ABI is seen foremost as a metal band, ‘The Shine’ keeps the pace up before leading to ‘The Expedition’ which is a short flamenco guitar piece! The eclectic approach continues to the showpiece of the album, ‘On My Own’; a neo-classical introduction followed by a nu-metal chorus and verse with its pace and volume turned up. Volpe´s vocals excel in this song whereas just keeping up with the song would be impressive in its own right. The next tracks, ‘Washed Away’; and ‘Still Constricted’ keep up the intensity and the band´s niche is clear. ABI’s sweet spot is its relentless but tuneful epics with a heavy guitar approach.
‘Windfall’ is a brave album that has taken the risk of introducing a multitude of styles and instruments (as exemplified by the bonus track, an acoustic version of ‘Unchanged’) but it works. All But Impossible has produced a highly credible album made more impressive by the youthfulness of the band. This is an album worth checking out and definitely a band to look out for in the future.
