Way too little here to truly grab the attention and keep you interested.

Deep Rising were formed in New York in 1998, and they describe themselves as a ‘spiritual rock band with a progressive edge’, citing diverse artist along the likes of Porcupine Tree, King’s X, Rush, Peter Gabriel, Alice In Chains, Seal and Led Zeppelin as influences.

The immediate impression I get from this, the band’s debut CD (as far as I can determine, their website is not exactly awash with useful information!) is that Deep Rising’s sound is arty contemporary rock with the aforementioned progressive edge, and adding the occasional element of pop and grunge. Unfortunately, while making notes I also jotted down the words dull, bland and insipid. The songs are decently played, but are just too one-dimensional; evenly paced and devoid of enough melody to make you want to keep coming back for more.

Vocalist Nick Kerzner’s voice is rather flat and uninspiring, and although the occasional tasteful guitar solo from Glenn Burges eases the boredom slightly, the songs soon return to being monotonous, whether it be the eastern-tinged ‘Led Balloon,’ the acoustic led-title track, the art-rock of ‘Kitesfly’, the grungy ‘Thief’, or the fuzzy guitar riffed lead-off track ‘Save Yourself’ (a warning maybe?); and never has there been a more fitting song-title than ‘Autopilot’!

I really don’t like writing bad reviews, as at the end of the day they are just opinions, but I just can’t find anything positive to say. I don’t want to be responsible for encouraging anybody to spend their hard earned cash on something that is not worthwhile. Fact: I actually fell asleep while listening to this CD. Twice. As much as I enjoy occasionally listening to slower and laid-back music, there’s way too little here to truly grab the attention and keep you interested.

I always listen to the CD’s while I’m writing the review, so I’d better get this one wrapped up before I fall asleep again!
