A very impressive release.
Following on from the excellent ‘Big Life’ album that I reviewed earlier on this year for this magazine & web site, Steve Newman returns with a new album ‘Under Southern Skies’ under his Newman banner. Although he has a live band, in the studio it’s Steve on vocals/guitar/keys with drummer Rob McEwan, and what’s on offer here as with anything that involves Steve Newman is hook-laden melodic rock songs with crystal clear production, catchy choruses and a very melodic disposition without any kind of rough edges.
Newman who handles the vocals himself in this band does not have the typical AOR voice but keeps to a lower vocal range and does not really bother with much of the higher notes which for me is the main difference between the ‘Big Life’ project and his own band. ‘Under Southern Skies’ provides us with eleven tracks and nearly an hours worth of music, and as you would expect from a ‘Newman’ album there are some top drawer melodic rock gems, none more so than opening track ‘Killing Me’ and 'If He Loves You' – which features a massive chorus and some great guitar work.
'Montserrat' shows a new direction for ‘Newman’, as it’s a mini-epic type track with the piano building the song up nicely, before some crunching riffs join in and carry the song along to its conclusion, and it would be interesting to see if Mr Newman does more songs in this vein in the future. Another stand out track for me is the very catchy 'Strength To Carry On’, which I am sure, would shine in the live arena. So, two great albums in one year involving Steve Newman, which is perfect for fans of his music and those after a high quality melodic rock album. ‘Under Southern Skies’ is a very impressive release, as the production and sound is great and the songs on offer are of a very high quality.
Therefore if you are a fan of ‘Newman’ or ‘Big Life’ I am sure you will find this album an essential purchase and I for one can’t wait for some of these tunes to be aired at this year's FireFest.
