Alex Carole & The Crush could achieve the same international acclaim that has blessed The Hives.

Having decided that he needed to move on from the confines of being one of the main songwriters in the indie pop outfit CDOASS, Alex Carole began to put together songs in an altogether harder, more power-pop-punk style. A chance meeting with The Hives drummer Chris Dangerous led to Alex giving him a demo tape he had been working on, which suitably impressed The Hives man enough to entice him to co produce this debut album with the band. Unsurprisingly then, the end results aren't a million miles removed from the good time, in your face shout alongs that The Hives so revel in, but that isn't the whole story, with all the songs on this album giving more than a hefty nod towards the seventies, with (very) early Cheap Trick, a more raucous Mott The Hoople and the droning, but melodic guitars of The Glitter Band often being brought to mind. The Crush are made up of musicians from Carole's hometown of Fagersta and they have, as all Swedish power-pop-punkers do, equally believable names such as Patches (guitar), Crystal Matt (drums), Jon Lander (bass) and Edwin "The Slider" Johnson, but don't worry, they are far more proficient on their chosen instruments than those monikers would suggest. The jangly, intentionally loose guitar interplay between Patches and Carole is a joy and leaves just enough room for the hurled out vocals to hit their mark every time.

Carole himself comes from the shout in tune vocal stable, which works perfectly on this album of rabble rousing rock and roll and his style adds a real spit fuelled edge to proceedings. Don't though go thinking that what that means is that 'Vol 1' is all attitude over substance, as that would be a great distance from the truth. The likes of opening track 'High School Stuff' is an adrenalin packed slab of seventies Glam Rock, coming on like an authentic, but completely up to date stack heeled romp, while 'Oh Please!' takes things into that early Cheap Trick mould, with a hefty side of The Hives adding a whole lot of sneering attitude to the melody. There is however also a smidge more subtlety in places with 'Heartache Too' toning things down ever so slightly, although the harmony vocals and big brash melodies still leave a lasting imprint.

'Vol 1' is a classy and assured debut album that suggests that with the right nurturing Alex Carole & The Crush could achieve the same international acclaim that has blessed The Hives. If you are looking for a fun way to while away thirty five minutes, before being seduced to hit play again and again, then I can heartily recommend that you shake it up with Alex Carole and The Crush.
