A perfect collection of AOR tunes.

Three years on from their fantastic debut 'Into The Night', the Norwegian melodic rockers return with their sophomore release 'Waiting For Daybreak'. The band's present line-up consists of three original members in vocalist Glenn Wikran, keyboardist Odd-Borge Hansen and guitarist Terje Floyli who are now accompanied by a new rhythm section of Andreas Jentoft (drums) and Lasse Ingebritsen (bass). The opus was recorded in Trondheim, Norway, and was mixed by Ronny Wikmark and mastered by the illustrious JK Northrup. What awaits you from the next generation of Scandinavian rockers?

'All Because Of You' is a gentle opener with a mix of all the classic ingredients required for perfect AOR like subtle keys, a soothing back rhythm and a light yet powerful vocal – it's a great start. 'Time Mends A Broken Heart' is up next, and the title gives you an idea of what to expect and these guys certainly deliver. Wikran may not have the strongest voice, but he's perfect for this genre. The musicianship is of the highest order and this is especially showcased on the wonderful 'She's The One', a meandering, soulful track featuring some beautiful vocal harmonies interlinked with an excellent drive to the melody.

The superb 'Lighthouse' is another slow burner with its delicate guitar work and pace, it's a top-class AOR tune that the genre greats would've been proud to call their own. What stands out is the amazing crystal-clear production which takes the music to the next level; if only all releases were this good. 'Learning To Live Again' brings the guitar to the forefront and whilst sounding somewhat heavier, it still has a level of subtlety within the vocal. 'Owner Of My Heart' is a personal favourite, and again the ramped-up guitar, some great support from the rhythm and keys plus the catchy vocal all combine to produce a great modern sound, albeit with its roots firmly in the past. The album continues with slight tempo changes and each song carries its own unique quality. It's not often you play a release without a duff track but for me this is one; it comprises twelve high-quality songs which run together impeccably.

Outlasted have produced a follow-up to be proud of with a perfect collection of AOR tunes. It's not often an album grips me from first listen. I've been lucky enough to play this all summer and it's a truly feel-good record that's definitely worth the investment. It's guaranteed to outlast other purchases in your playlist.
