Black Stone Cherry / The Cadillac Three / Monster Truck - Wembley Arena, London (UK) - 14 December 2018

Monster Truck kicked off with their own brand of Southern Rock, vocals underpinned by a harder Metal base.

The Cadillac Three have more memorable songs and have a more bluesy approach, even touching on Country & Western with 'Hank & Jesus'. Being only a threesome the drummer Neil Mason takes a very active part of the show, standing, gesticulating and banging his sticks and they have a fantastic large three skull backdrop which brings out their own particular character traits. Their slower songs showcase vocalists Jaren Johnston's voice. They finished with a bunch of unashamedly good ol' boys songs, encouraging the crowd to sing by comparing them with Myles Kennedy and warming them up nicely for BSC.

Black Stone Cherry kicked off with excellent new single 'Burnin'. As always guitarist Ben Wells injected immediate irrepressible energy with running kicks, and vocalist Chris Robertson while staying put contributed his distinctive voice and gravitas from the middle of the stage. By the time of 'Like I Roll' and 'Till My Last Breath' they got the crowd to sing.

Next up during 'Cheaper To Drink Alone' we got the first of many large vertical gusts of smoke-like explosions without the fire and the band were well into their stride. A nice touch was a thank-you to the crowd for sticking with the band all the way from small clubs to Wembley, and a reassurance that they are playing for each and every one of the crowd whether they can see their face or not. There were a couple of changes of pace with acid-like silhouettes of sixties women during 'James Brown', and then tearjerker 'Things My Father Said' was the cue for a large amount of cell-phone lights like little stars adding to the atmosphere, while Robertson's voice was made a real feature by this slower song which took the music down a notch. This was followed quickly by another favourite, the sexy 'Ain't Nobody'.

The backdrops took a distinctly psychedelic turn as the band encouraged the crowd to dance, although we got a Union Jack and an ancient Celt banner too during 'Blindman' with a nod to ex pat origins. After a drum solo and the Willie Dixon Cover 'Hoochie Coochie Man' with a soulful solo from Robertson, the band were on the home straight with the monster hits 'Lonely Train', 'Blame It On The Boom Boom' and 'White Trash Millionaire'.

Finishing with 'Family Tree' and encore and older track 'Peace Is Free', it was dramatic to see the number of fans this band now has in the UK. Proof that great, no frills musicianship can make it to the top. They do point out that they have been together for seventeen years and playing the UK for eleven. Thankfully they are living proof that persistence can play off and the music industry is not all about ephemeral fluff. Nice to see them do themselves proud on this night at Wembley and to fly the flag for Southern Rock and Classic Rock in style.

  • SeaDog57 : just an observation. I just got Issue 89 at the Bookstore and when i looked at the spine of the magazine it says "Fireworks Issue 85 Winter Jan - Mar 2019" Was this a misprint? The rest of the Magazine is Issue 89. Was just wondering did anyone else notice this?
