The Wayward Sons - O2 Academy, Sheffield (UK) - 20 April 2018

There was no official support band this evening, instead, we had a short film of the four videos made for the singles released from last year's brilliant 'Ghosts Of Yet To Come' album. Then bizarrely, we had fifteen minutes of comedian Pete K. Mally. I don't think that I would make the effort to see him perform on his own, but the fact that he did not get booed off stage and raised the odd laugh was credit to him. However, it was Toby Jepson and his band of Wayward Sons that we had all come out to see on a warm, South Yorkshire night. This was the first gig of the year which I was able to attend in just shorts and a t-shirt, and although very hot inside the venue, it was not quite the cauldron of HRH-Blues a week earlier.

This is how you promote your band and album. Get out on the road and play all the songs from the record. Credit to the band too as they kept the merchandise to a reasonable price as well. What was really impressive this evening was that the crowd sang every word from every song, all from an album that was only released last September. 'Alive' and 'Ghost' kicked off the proceedings and it was evident that this was going to be a great show. Jepson still has the pipes and was adroitly assisted by Nic Wastell on bass, Phil Martini on drums, David Kemp on keyboards and Sam Wood on guitar.

For this small part of the O2 Academy (the one with the low ceiling) the sound was very good and this just added to the enjoyment of the evening. As I looked around the approximate four to five hundred punters, there were lots of happy, smiling faces and a few fans going wild, which included a couple in front me of me (whom unfortunately I knew!). The audience needed very little encouragement to join in the party and sang the choruses at the top of their voices; a very impressive feat for an album that is only seven months old.

Highlights were the aforementioned set openers, 'Killing Time', the Little Angels' classic 'Kickin' Up Dust' and an extended version of fan-favourite 'Crush', which included a short cover of Blondie's 'Union City Blues'.

The basic 'Radio Denial' was a reminder of when the highlight of the week was Friday night between 10.00pm and midnight for Tommy Vance's 'Friday Night Rock Show'. A couple of songs that were recorded for the album, but rejected by Frontiers, were played this evening and these were 'Standby Heart' and 'Backslide', the latter sounded uncannily like they were singing about Northern Ireland and Manchester United legend Norman Whiteside!

Final song of the evening was the Little Angels' classic 'Young Gods' that concluded with the ending of the Queen classic 'Bohemian Rhapsody'.

Jepson rose to the top with Little Angels back in the eighties and with the 'Ghosts Of Yet To Come' I can see him repeating that feat with The Wayward Sons.

  • SeaDog57 : just an observation. I just got Issue 89 at the Bookstore and when i looked at the spine of the magazine it says "Fireworks Issue 85 Winter Jan - Mar 2019" Was this a misprint? The rest of the Magazine is Issue 89. Was just wondering did anyone else notice this?
